Description
  1. Effectively performs the duties and responsibilities of a certified first assistant including:
    1. Skin preparation and draping
    2. Positioning the patient
    3. Provide visualization of the operative site
    4. Assist with hemostasis
    5. Closure of wounds- Subcutaneous and skin only
    6. Applying wound dressings
    7. Assistance with securing drains to tissue
  2. Provides quality patient care consistently according to hospital standards and policy/procedures.
  3. Accepts accountability and responsibility as a member of the department of surgical services.
  4. Functions under direction and supervision of surgeon in accordance with the hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.
  5. Reports directly to the Director of Surgical Services with direction from the Chief of Surgery.
  6. Assignment of case depends upon physician request preoperatively or on emergency situations.
  7. Coordination of surgical team efforts to offer the most qualified support to the patient, surgeon, and other team members.
  8. Awareness of the patient as an individual with specific psychological, physical, and spiritual needs.
  9. Development of a code of professional behavior that will promote responsibility as an individual and also a member of the health care team.
  10. Maintains continuing education hours as defined by the Association of Surgical Technologists and First Assistants.
  11. Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs of the bariatric patient.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology with certification as a CST.
  • Maintenance of continuing education, required.
  • AND if performing Vein Harvesting must complete and document the following:
  • Certificate of Training that includes a didactic presentation, leg model training, cadaver laboratory training and case observation in Endoscopic vessel harvesting.
  • Certified First Assistant (CFA) through National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required.
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification, required.
  • Minimum 5 years experience as Certified Surgical Tech, REQUIRED.
  • Documentation of a minimum of two years current Operating Room experience as a ortho surgical first assistant required.
Must be able to:
Stand for up to 8 hour (s) per day
Sit up to 8 hour (s) per day
Walk for up to 8 hours per day
Perform repetitive tasks / motions
Distinguish colors
Hear alarms / telephone / tape recorder /
normal speaking voice
Have good manual dexterity
Have good eye - hand - foot coordination
Have corrected clarity of vision
